The Journey

Singapore has longed pride itself on the spirit of meritocracy. But how effective is this ‘meritocracy’ we preach? Are we on the edge equality or is the inequality between classes in Singapore widening more than ever? Coming from a  middle income family background, I have never had to struggle with food. While my family was by no means rich, we always had food on our table and a place to sleep at night. The same could not be said for my friends when i was in secondary school.

I decided to venture into the ‘untouched’ and ‘ignored’ parts of Singapore where many Singaporeans despite our nation’s status as  a first world country, still live in intense poverty and do not even have the basic living necessity.

The Challenge

After years operating in my personal studio in Woodlands, I have outgrown the space and am now facing an important challenge. I do not wish to throw away my old works, and I also need space for the new paintings and photographies.

I wish to print them out on giant canvasses to easier appreciate the beauty and abstract art that photography is. I also need to hire build a airtight room to keep the art so they do not spoil by coming into contact with oxygen.

The goal

In order to begin work, I would need to move into a new studio with the necessary studio equipments. The airtight room is extremely important to keeping the quality of the artwork and the photographs and I would need it ready before i can start painting.

This room costs $2000 to build.

I am also looking to hire local artists to teach them about the ins and out of the local art scene so more people can become involved in Singapore’s art scene. I do not wish to simply put the title of intern on them and use them as free labor, instead, I wish to offer them a reasonable salary while teaching them the ways of the industry.

I also require a $5000 to rent one single gallery at the Singapore Arts Museum. This includes all the electricity and stands to put up the artwork, as well as the pay for the security to protect the artworks.
