Despite it’s relatively forward thinkingness, Singapore is still rather traditional society. Females are still viewed by some as the ‘caretakers’ and many still expect women to stay at home and look after the kids after marriage. Singapore has long had a huge number of females who have contributed greatly to the development of the Nation. Through this poetry collection, I hope to bring across the message that females are not lesser than males, and I hope to inspire younger girls to believe and dream big.

The Journey
I hope to raise a total of $6000 in order to commit myself without having to meet the NAC’s regulation. I believe being regulated by the government places a cap on creativity and it limits what we can write and do as writers and poets. I also want to pay the 5 winners and not simply get their poems for free. This money will go into the production and printing of my collection and also to pay the editor’s fee.
I intend to take a 3 months leave from school to dedicate myself to this project as it is extremely close to my heart. I also hope to give young poets a chance by organising a competition to include 5 poems from 5 different young poets in my collection. I wish to pay them a prize of $200 per poem. I hope this increases awareness of the poetry scene in Singapore.
