The Journey

In November 2016, I moved back to Singapore after 6 months in Japan. I noticed that Singapore and Japan had a lot of similarities. Both countries have an aging population and both countries’ youngsters seem live a fast paced life. One main difference I noticed when I was in Japan was the appreciation for the elderly.

The Japanese culture places an emphasis on respecting your elders, something that Singapore severely lacks. I decided to embark on a project to create an opera and choral performance that preaches on the positivity of life during one’s silver age. And this play is not only just for the elderly, but in fact is targeted at the younger generation in an attempt to help them appreciate the older people and gain a new appreciation for old age by music.

The Challenge

Despite my expertise in music composition, composing an collaborative opera and choral performance is something new to me. I need to engage various experts in the opera industry for them to aid me in my composition.

Also, to fully bring out the beauty of what I have planned, I would need to rent the Esplanade’s Choral Theatre so my performers and actors can practice properly in order to give the perfect performance. It is also necessary to ensure that all actors and performers get paid the minimum to ensure that they don’t starve.

The Goal

In order to move begin preparation and for the actors to fully commit, we need to start purchasing our stage sets and we also need money to pay the actors. The most important investment for this project is 1) the opera composer, 2) actor’s pay and 3) the stage set. I am looking to pay the actors $100 per rehearsal for a total of 5 hours each rehearsal.

The opera composer is also looking at a minimum fee of $500 for his work. In order to build the perfect set for the best performance, we’re looking at a budget of $5000 for the set pieces and we also need to pay people to build the beds, staircases and houses on stage. With all these, we will be able to start production and rehearsal as early as July 2017 and the performance will be ready by November 2017.
